Information for families
Child Care Tax Rebate (CCTR) – From 1st July 2008
The Child Care Tax Rebate (CCTR) is a payment from the Government that helps working families with the cost of child care. If you are using approved child care for work, training or study-related reasons, from 1 July 2008, the Government will provide you with 50% of your out-of-pocket child care costs, up to $7,500 (indexed) per child per year.
Changes to CCTR
From 1 July 2008, subject to the passage of legislation, the Government will increase the level of assistance to families with child care costs by increasing the CCTR from 30% to 50%, up to $7,500 per child per year, and paying the rebate quarterly, rather than annually. Quarterly payments provide more timely assistance to families with their child care costs, with the first payments due from October 2008.
If you currently receive CCTR and your family circumstances do not change you will still be able to receive CCTR.
To be eligible for CCTR.
There are certain requirements you must meet to get the CCTR.
- The claimant must have been assessed as eligible for Child Care Benefit (CCB)
- The claimant and partner must have passed the CCB work, training, study test (for the purposes of the CCTR rebate)
- The child care provided must be by an approved child care service provider which our service is.
What if I will no longer get any CCB payments as a result of the announced changes to minimum rate CCB? Am I still eligible for CCTR?
You may still receive CCTR, regardless of your income, as long as you meet the basic eligibility criteria for CCB.
These eligibility criteria are not income related.
The basic CCB eligibility requirements that you will need to meet to obtain CCTR include:
- you use approved child care, and
- you or your partner (if you have one) are living permanently in Australia, and
- you are either an Australian citizen, a New Zealand citizen, the holder of a permanent visa, the holder of certain temporary visas, an Australian Government sponsored student or in other special circumstances, and
- your child is immunised or exempt from the immunisation requirements, and
- you are liable for child care fees for your child.
Guardians, including foster parents and grandparents, responsible for the day-to-day care of children/grandchildren may be eligible for CCB and therefore may also be eligible for CCTR. If you are unsure if you are eligible for either CCTR or CCB you should contact the Family Assistance Office to confirm your eligibility. They can help you assess which payments you are eligible for.
CCTR is not means tested
Provided you still meet eligibility for CCB and use approved care, you will still be able to claim 50% of your out-of-pocket child care costs.
